What Counts as a Business Day?

A business day is a day when businesses, banks and government offices are normally open: Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays. "Working day" means the same thing in almost every context, and the two terms are used interchangeably in contracts, shipping estimates and official notices.

The exact definition can vary. A contract, court rule or regulation may define its own business day; for example, some banking rules count any day the bank is open for substantially all of its business, which can include Saturdays. When a deadline really matters, check the definition in the document that sets it.

Business Days vs. Calendar Days

Calendar days count every day on the calendar, including weekends and holidays. Business days skip them. The gap grows with the length of the period: 10 business days take two calendar weeks, while 90 business days stretch over four months. The table below converts the most common periods (holidays add one or more days on top of these figures).

Business daysWork weeksCalendar days (no holidays)Approx. months
10 business days 2 14 0.5
30 business days 6 42 1.4
45 business days 9 63 2.1
60 business days 12 84 2.8
90 business days 18 126 4.1

Calendar days are counted from a Monday start. Starting later in the week can add up to two extra days.

How to Count Business Days

  1. Pick the start date. Most deadlines start counting on the day after the event (the start day is not counted).
  2. Move forward one day at a time and count only Monday to Friday.
  3. Skip public holidays that fall on a weekday in the relevant country.
  4. Stop when you reach the target number. That day is your deadline, and it is always a business day.
Deadline = Start + N + weekend days + weekday holidays

Counting by hand gets error-prone over long periods because the number of weekends and holidays depends on the start date. The calculators above do the day-by-day count for you.

Which Holidays Are Skipped?

Our business day calculators exclude national public holidays for 11 countries. A few rules decide which dates are skipped:

  • United States: the 11 federal holidays. When a holiday falls on a Saturday it is observed on Friday; on a Sunday, it moves to Monday.
  • United Kingdom, Canada, Australia: when a holiday falls on a weekend, a substitute weekday off is given (usually the following Monday).
  • Continental Europe and India: holidays stay on their date; a holiday on a weekend simply doesn't affect the count.
  • Regional holidays (U.S. state holidays, Canadian provincial days, German state holidays) are not included.
