The Science of TV Placement

Proper TV placement is more than just aesthetics; it's about comfort and immersion. Hanging a TV too high (the "TVTooHigh" phenomenon) causes neck strain similar to sitting in the front row of a movie theater. Our TV Mounting Calculator uses standard cinematic guidelines to ensure your eyes land naturally on the screen.

How to Calculate Viewing Distance

The optimal distance depends on the field of view (FOV). Higher FOV provides a more "immersive" experience but can cause eye strain if you're too close to a large screen.

Distance =
Screen Width
2 × tan(Angle / 2)

For a 40° cinematic experience (THX recommendation), the simple rule of thumb is:

DistanceScreen Diagonal × 1.2

TV Mounting Height Guidelines

The most important rule is that your seated eye level should align with the center of the screen, or at least the bottom third.

  • Center of Screen: Eye level should be roughly 42 inches (107 cm) from the floor for an average sofa height.
  • Viewing Angle: You should not have to look up more than 15 degrees to see the center of the screen.
  • Screen Tilt: If you must mount the TV higher (e.g., above a fireplace), tilt the screen downward to reduce the reflection and keep the pixels perpendicular to your line of sight.
Standard Measurements: A 65-inch TV is approximately 32 inches high. If your eye level is 40 inches, the bottom of the TV should be around 24 inches from the floor for the center to match your eyes.
